Skincare might be a choice for most of us, but wearing sunscreen is a necessity. Thanks to the wide range of sunscreens available in the market, dodging the skin cancer-causing UV rays has become a much easier task. However, having to choose from multiple sunscreen types causes many people to get confused between sunscreen gels and sunscreen creams. While both gel and cream based sunscreens serve their purpose against harmful UV radiation, depending on your skin type, humidity, and preference, either sunscreen can be the best choice.

What Are Gel-Based & Cream-Based Sunscreens?

When it comes to sunscreens, the two most popular options are cream-based and gel-based sunscreens. Although they both work as a shield against UV rays, in terms of texture, formula, colour, and properties, gel-based and cream-based sunscreens possess notable differences. In a nutshell, gel-based sunscreens have a lightweight gel texture, while cream-based sunscreens are thick moisturisers that generally have a greasy formula.

Key Differences Between Gel & Cream Sunscreens

The major contrasts between gel-based and cream-based sunscreens are:

  • Texture

Cream sunscreen has a rich creamy, moisturiser-like texture, which keeps the skin well hydrated. It is basically a moisturiser with sun protection properties. Gel sunscreen, on the contrary, is lightweight and gets quickly absorbed into the skin.

  • Colour

Cream-based sunscreens are mostly white or tinted, while gel options tend to be translucent and clear.

  • Ingredients

Rich in moisturising properties, cream sunscreens are generally formulated with hydrating ingredients that lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and supple for a longer time. In gel sunscreens, you'll find active ingredients that cause the gel to get absorbed easily and offer a moist yet non-greasy finish.

  • Ideal for

Due to its hydrating properties and creamy texture, people with dry and combination skin find cream-based sunscreens ideal for their skin. On the other hand, if your skin is oily or acne-prone, opting for a gel sunscreen will be the best choice.

Pros and Cons of Each Type

  • Cream Sunscreen Pros:

  1. Serves as both moisturiser and sunscreen.

  2. Great for dry skin.

  3. Keeps the skin well-hydrated throughout the day.

  4. Offers better sun protection.

  • Cream Sunscreen Cons:

  1. It can feel greasy on the skin.

  2. Not a good match for oily-skinned people.

  3. May clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.

  • Gel Sunscreen Pros:

  1. Offers a non-greasy, smooth finish.

  2. Can be used as a primer before applying moisturiser.

  3. Best choice for oily and acne-prone skin.

  • Gel Sunscreen Cons:

  1. Can cause skin to feel dry in cold weather.

  2. Lacks moisturising properties.

  3. Can boost dryness for dry skin people.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

The key to choosing the best sunscreen is to keep your skin type and its requirements in mind. If you have dry skin, a sunscreen with a rich creamy texture will keep your skin moist and nourished. Opt for a cream-based sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera etc. However, this option doesn't work for oily and acne-prone skin. Choosing a gel sunscreen with a lightweight formula, active ingredients, and broad-spectrum SPF will be the best bet in this case.

Tips for Proper Use

Here are some tips for proper application:

  • Always wear sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out in sunlight. It will allow the sunscreen to get absorbed and settle on the skin.

  • Apply sunscreen as the final layer on your skin.

  • If you are using a tinted sunscreen, consider skipping foundation or BB cream.

  • Frequently re-apply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

  • Consider wearing a sunscreen body lotion to save other exposed parts of your body as well.

Conclusion

Between the two most popular sunscreen options, only choosing the right one can make a difference. While both gel and cream-based sunscreen have their own pros and cons, one must opt for the option that serves their skin's needs the best. No matter what texture you may opt for, don't forget to choose a sunscreen with SPF 50 or more.
